Radford University business students are learning what trading is like in the real world. The Virginia-based university partnered with Rise Display of Shawnee, KS, to equip the classroom with the latest digital signage technology.
Rise Display’s technology simulates the trading floor environment that students will encounter after graduation. Radford University’s finance lab features two interactive touch screens that show indices, currencies, commodities, and bonds, along with tables and charts and financial news updates. Three passive digital displays featuring financial charts, tables, and Reuters news. The room also features a LED stock ticker running the constituents of the S&P 100 and a digital world clock showing current time for popular markets around the globe.
According to associate professor of finance Steven Beach, “It’s incredible how we can now make the instruction dynamic. If I’m talking about the Nikkei index in Japan, I can go over and tap on the screen, look at the currency exchanges as the yen has been depreciating, and then relate that all back together to the returns that students get on their investments here in the U.S.”
Dr. Beach says that students enjoy the digital signage in the Finance Lab, which is evident by how many additional hours they spend in there. “My favorite thing about the Finance Lab is the excitement from the students. It’s amazing how it draws them in and encourages them to push themselves farther and farther in their learning. This is all about them, so it has really paid off.”
Ryan Cahoy of Rise Display says that the company’s vast experience working with business schools gave them insight into bridging the classroom and actual trading centers. “The business world is more competitive than ever, so it’s essential that schools give their students every possible advantage. That includes providing the type of technology that they will encounter after graduation on Wall-Street.”
Dr. Beach said he appreciated the collaborative effort with Rise Display to develop the right combination of digital signage that would be both effective and affordable. “They made the process very easy. We would kick ideas back and forth and they really made sure that we got the best product out of our relationship at the end of the day.”
Radford University is listed as one of the nation’s “Top Up-and-Coming Schools” in the “U.S. News and World Report’s 2010 Guide to America’s Best Colleges”. The school was also ranked by The Princeton Review as one of the best colleges and universities in the Southeast.
